My husband and I are high school sweethearts and have been married for 14 years. Our journey of wanting to have children was unsuccessful after years of trying and not being able to conceive. My mind and heart has always wanted to be a mother and have a big family. I grew up in a big family and wanted to follow in that path of sharing the love and joys of life with a big family. While everyone around me were having babies and their families were continuing to growing I still had no babies. This situation was really tough for my husband and I to think that we would never have children in our life because we have always been the people helping and spending time with kids around us. I took my dreams and desires and turned to prayer and asked God to bless us.
I remember that day so clear, We were up north at a traditional ceremony and my phone started ringing, it was our licensing agent and she stated that the ICWA unit had a sweet 5 day old baby boy in hospital that needed a forever home. I was so excited and tears started running done my face as I couldn’t even believe her call came through because in that area we have really bad reception. The next day I went to visit my sweet angel that only weighed 5 pounds and he fit in the palm of my hand. From that day forward I was in love. This journey has changed my life forever and I’m forever gratefully blessed. We now have 5 beautiful children that we love unconditionally Being a Native Adoptive/Foster family has really opened my eyes to see our Native Communities need more Natives to get involved.
